Thamotharampillai Manivasager, a prominent former shipping merchant, passed away today in Valvettithurai at the age of 86. Mr. Manivasager, who hailed from Valvettithurai, was widely known for his multi-faceted business ventures, especially for recruiting seafarers mainly from Jaffna from the early 1970s until the mid-1990s.
Having migrated to Singapore in 1970, he lived in both Malaysia and Singapore, helping many local youths secure various employment opportunities in merchant shipping.
In 2015, Mr. Manivasager was honored by the Valvai Seafarers Welfare Association for his excellent commitment to advancing the careers of many seafarers in Jaffna, particularly in Valvettithurai. His efforts helped produce professionals across various ranks—including numerous Master Mariners—achievements for which he never sought personal credit.
